Woman loses Rs 1.39 lac in online matrimonial scam

Chimbel, Feb 11: A woman from Indira Nagar, Chimbel, fell victim to an online matrimonial fraud and was cheated of Rs 1.39 lac, police said.

According to Old Goa Police, the woman had connected with a man through a matrimonial platform. He claimed to be sending a parcel with valuable items, after which she received calls from individuals posing as courier and Customs officials demanding money for delivery and clearance charges.

Believing their claims, she transferred the amount via UPI, but the parcel never arrived, and the scammers’ contacts went unreachable.

A case of cheating has been registered, and police are investigating to trace the accused and their methods. Authorities urged citizens to remain cautious when interacting with strangers online and verify any monetary requests before making payments.
