Mangaluru, Feb 7: A cancer awareness programme titled ‘Let’s Avoid Cancer’ was held at KMC Hospital, Mangaluru on Saturday February 7, at the Ground Floor, Tower–2, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle. The initiative witnessed participation from doctors, senior citizens, youth, and college students who came together to understand the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.
The programme brought experts from Hemato Oncology, Breast Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, and Pediatric Hemato Oncology onto a common platform. The specialists spoke in detail about major cancers including breast, stomach, lung, colorectal, prostate, and blood cancer, while also addressing myths and facts related to childhood cancer.

Doctors discussed several lifestyle-related risk factors such as smartphone radiation exposure during sleep, use of microwave food, non-stick cookware and air fryers, consumption of hot food in plastic containers, passive smoking, and the growing intake of processed and junk food. Emphasis was also laid on recognising early warning signs like blood in sputum or stool and understanding the influence of family history and genetic predisposition.
The expert panel comprised Dr Prashanth B (haematology & general medicine), Dr Harsha Prasad (paediatric hemato oncology), Dr Basila Ameer Ali (breast surgery), Dr Karthik K S (surgical oncology), and Dr Sanyo P D’Souza (medical oncology).
Addressing the gathering, the doctors stressed that many cancers are curable if detected at an early stage and urged the public not to ignore persistent symptoms. The interactive session allowed students and elderly participants to clarify doubts regarding screenings, vaccinations, and healthy lifestyle practices.
The programme concluded with a call to adopt balanced food habits, regular exercise, and timely medical check-ups as effective steps towards a cancer-free society.
