Mangaluru, Jan 29: Under the leadership of Rashtriyavadi Christara Vedike, Mangaluru, a commemorative programme along with a volleyball tournament was organised on Thursday, January 29, to mark the seventh death anniversary of former defence and railway minister and Padma Vibhushan awardee Shri George Fernandes.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries. Former Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the event and delivered the keynote address. Speaking on the occasion, Kateel recalled the life journey, principles and contributions of George Fernandes, describing him as a fearless leader who lived a simple life and worked relentlessly for the nation and the common people. He said that Fernandes’ ideals continue to guide and inspire the youth of the country.






























The event was held in the presence of Col (Rtd) A Jayachandran of the Indian Army, who attended as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included Sri Pradeep D’Souza, deputy director, Dakshina Kannada district youth service and sports department; Maxim Crasta, Ashoknagar, businessman; B S Sathish Kumar, Class I PWD contractor and president, Dakshina Kannada District Volleyball Association (R), Mangaluru; R Ramakrishna, former president, Press Club Mangaluru; and Cynthia Moras, City Arena Gaming Center.
As part of the programme, educational support was extended to school and college students through the distribution of books, encouraging academic development among the youth.
Later, the volleyball ground was formally inaugurated, following which the volleyball competition was launched by the dignitaries. Players enthusiastically participated in the matches, adding energy and sporting spirit to the event.
The programme witnessed the participation of students, youth, sportspersons and members of the public. The organisers said the initiative aimed at honouring the legacy of George Fernandes while promoting education, discipline and sportsmanship among young minds.
