New Delhi, Jan 28: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday addressed the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, marking the commencement of the Budget Session of Parliament, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to “true social justice.”
In her address, Murmu highlighted several key achievements of the government, including social welfare measures benefiting women, Dalit and Adivasi communities, and rapid progress in science, technology, and infrastructure. She emphasised that social security benefits now reach nearly 95 crore citizens, and claimed that 25 crore Indians have been lifted out of poverty over the past decade.

Paying tribute, she condoled the tragic death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, calling it an “irreparable loss” and acknowledging his contributions to the cooperative sector in the state.
Development & Infrastructure Milestones
President Murmu lauded the country’s infrastructural progress, citing achievements in Indian Railways with expanded connectivity, the introduction of Vande Bharat trains, and the near completion of 100% electrification. She also mentioned record-breaking projects such as the Chenab Bridge and the Pamban Bridge, showcasing India’s engineering prowess.
The President highlighted the growth in manufacturing, electronics, agro-commodities, and fisheries, noting that the government has strengthened India’s foundation across sectors over the past decade.
National Security & Defence
Murmu reaffirmed India’s stance on national security, citing Operation Sindoor, decisive actions against Maoist insurgency, and the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty as part of counter-terrorism efforts. She noted that fear and distrust have been reduced from 126 districts to just eight, with nearly 2,000 Maoists surrendering in the past year, demonstrating the success of anti-Naxal campaigns.
She also referred to Mission Sudarshan Chakra, aimed at further strengthening national security and enhancing trust in India’s defence platforms.
Honouring Heritage & Inspiring Future Generations
The President celebrated India’s rich cultural and historical heritage, recalling the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 150th birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda, and the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in fostering national unity. She said commemorating these figures inspires the younger generation and accelerates India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
The Economic Survey will be tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, with the Union Budget presentation scheduled for Sunday.
