Panaji, Jan 23: Officials from multiple government departments on Thursday conducted a joint inspection at the proposed site for the Unity Mall project in Chimbel, even as protestors opposing the development continued their indefinite strike.
The inspection team visited the exact location identified for the construction of the mall, with police personnel deployed at the site to ensure law and order during the exercise. The visit comes in the backdrop of sustained protests by local residents and other stakeholders, who have been voicing strong objections to the project.

Sources said the joint inspection was carried out to assess ground realities and examine various technical and administrative aspects connected with the proposed development. The participation of officials from several departments indicates that the project remains under active consideration despite the ongoing agitation.
Meanwhile, protestors reiterated their demands and asserted that their indefinite strike would continue until the authorities address their concerns. They maintained that the project could have adverse social and environmental impacts on the area.
Further clarity on the future course of action is expected after the completion of the inspection and subsequent deliberations by the government.
