Bengaluru, Jan 19: A major controversy has erupted in the state police department after explicit videos allegedly showed a senior IPS officer of DGP rank, Ramachandra Rao — stepfather of gold smuggling accused actress Ranya Rao — behaving indecently with women inside a police office. The video clip has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage and severe embarrassment for the state government.
The videos, reportedly recorded several years ago when the officer was posted in Belagavi, allegedly show him interacting inappropriately with women while in police uniform. The visuals sparked sharp criticism from the public, political circles and within the police establishment, raising serious questions about the dignity of the uniform and conduct expected from officers entrusted with maintaining law and order.

The matter reached chief minister Siddaramaiah, who expressed strong displeasure over the alleged conduct. Sources said the chief minister termed the incident unacceptable and directed senior home department officials to submit a detailed report. He also warned that no one is above the law and that strict disciplinary action would follow if the allegations are found to be true.
As the controversy intensified, Ramachandra Rao proceeded on a sudden 10-day leave and has remained out of contact. Both his official and personal mobile phones are reportedly switched off, and he has not been reachable by either government officials or the media. His move has further fuelled speculation amid growing demands for immediate action.
In a significant development, Ramachandra Rao attempted to meet home minister Dr G Parameshwara to present his explanation. However, the home minister declined to meet him and had him turned away at the gate itself, sending a strong signal that the government would not shield anyone accused of tarnishing the department’s image.
Meanwhile, sources indicated that chief minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the director general of police to initiate immediate suspension proceedings against Ramachandra Rao, citing the gravity of the allegations and the need to uphold public confidence in the police force.
Responding to the controversy, Ramachandra Rao denied the allegations, claiming the viral video was fabricated and possibly generated using artificial intelligence. He said the footage was shocking to him and insisted that he had no role in it. The officer maintained that the video surfaced nearly eight years after it was allegedly recorded and called it part of a larger conspiracy to defame him. He also demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the origin and circulation of the video and said he would seek legal remedies.
The episode has caused a major stir in state political and administrative circles, with the government facing pressure to act decisively. With suspension orders reportedly imminent and a departmental inquiry expected, the case is being closely watched for its potential impact on policing standards and accountability in the state.
