Ainapur, Jan 19: The happiness of a newlywed couple from Kolhapur was cut tragically short just one-and-a-half months after their marriage, as a 29-year-old woman lost her life in a road accident during Makar Sankranti celebrations.

Seema Vikas Patil (29), a resident of Ainapur village in Gadhinglaj taluk, died after sustaining critical injuries in a two-wheeler accident near Belagavi. The incident occurred barely 45 days after her marriage, turning what should have been her first festive season after wedding into a moment of lifelong grief for both families.

According to police, the accident took place on January 14, when Seema was travelling on a motorcycle with her husband Vikas to visit relatives at Devgiri after celebrating Makar Sankranti at Sampgaon. Near Ashoknagar, a speeding four-wheeler allegedly hit the motorcycle, causing it to lose balance and crash onto the road. Seema, who was seated as a pillion rider, suffered severe head injuries along with multiple other injuries.

She was initially admitted to a private hospital, but as her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the district hospital. Despite sustained treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on the night of January 17. North Traffic Police have registered a case and launched a search for the car driver involved in the accident. Investigations are underway with the help of eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage.

Seema, whose maiden name was Seema Annasaheb Mane, was married to Vikas Jarigonda Patil on December 2, 2025, in a grand ceremony at Ainapur. The couple, who were relatives, had been in a relationship for several years before tying the knot. Vikas, an engineering graduate, runs a mobile shop in Gadhinglaj, while Seema held a postgraduate degree in commerce and was employed at a local finance society.

Family members said that despite delays in marriage, relatives had taken special efforts to solemnise the wedding with much celebration. At the time of the accident, Vikas was riding the motorcycle and also sustained injuries. He is currently undergoing treatment.

Relatives recalled that even before her marriage, Seema actively participated in family festivities and assisted her mother-in-law with household chores. She had also secured permanent employment at the ‘Ravalnath’ institution after completing training under the Chief Minister’s Skill Development Scheme. Her untimely death has left the Patil and Mane families devastated, triggering widespread grief across Ainapur and surrounding areas.

Seema is survived by her husband, parents, in-laws, brother, sister, and extended family members. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the need for caution while driving, with police stating that overspeeding and loss of balance were key factors behind the mishap.
