Karkala, Jan 15: A man was rescued by the Karkala Fire Brigade after falling into a 30-foot-deep well and becoming trapped in an adjoining 20-foot-long underground tunnel in a dramatic incident on Wednesday night.

The victim, Radhakrishna (38), a resident of Bangale in the Karkala border area of Moodbidri taluk, reportedly lost his way in the darkness. “There was no boundary wall around the well, and in the pitch-black night, I did not notice it,” he later told officials.

He fell straight into the well, and the force of the fall pushed him into a tunnel at the bottom, about 20 feet long.

Trapped more than 50 feet below ground and semi-conscious, Radhakrishna was unable to move. Local labourers who heard his cries alerted the fire brigade immediately.

The Karkala Fire and Rescue team rushed to the scene and launched a meticulous rescue operation. Assistant station officer Chandrashekhar led the team, with personnel Jayamurali, Rupesh, Nityananda, Basavaraj, and Ganesh assisting. Radhakrishna was safely pulled out, bringing an end to the tense ordeal.

“Thanks to the quick response of the fire brigade, what could have been a tragedy was averted,” a local official said, praising the team’s efforts.
