Mangaluru: Music, service and prayer marks fifth day of Infant Jesus Novena

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 10: The fifth day of the Infant Jesus Novena, observed on January 9, at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, was marked by a meaningful blend of spirituality, service, and community participation, with a special focus on choir members and musicians who play a vital role in enriching worship through sacred music and prayer.

The day’s theme, 'Every fruitful branch He prunes for more fruit', inspired the faithful to reflect on inner renewal and spiritual growth in the light of the teachings of St John of the Cross, as part of the Shrine’s broader spiritual preparation for the annual feast.

Adding a strong humanitarian dimension to the day, the Shrine, in collaboration with Father Muller Medical Institutions, organised a blood donation camp to promote voluntary blood donation and encourage the public to participate in saving lives. The camp was inaugurated by Anil Lobo, chairman of MCC Bank, in the presence of Dr Kirana Piloor of Father Muller Medical College, Fr William Miranda of Carmel Jyothi Charitable Trust, Fr Melvin D’Cunha, superior of St Joseph’s Monastery, Fr Stifan Perera, director of the Infant Jesus Shrine, and Dolphy D’Souza. By the end of the day, around 75 donors had voluntarily donated blood, reflecting the strong spirit of social responsibility among the devotees.

One of the spiritual highlights of the day was the Eucharistic Adoration held after the 10.30 am Mass, during which many devotees spent time in silent prayer. In the afternoon, a community lunch was organised for the devotees, fostering a sense of fellowship and togetherness.

The day witnessed nine Eucharistic celebrations beginning at 6.00 am. The first Mass was celebrated by Fr Vijay D’Costa, professor of philosophy at Pushpashrama, Mysuru. The 7.30 am Mass was celebrated by Fr Don Tony, OCD, from Carmelite Monastery, Margao. Fr Sunil Rodrigues, president of CRI, Shimoga, presided over the Masses at 9.00 am and 6.00 pm Fr Clifford Fernandes, parish priest of Kulshekar, celebrated the 10.30 am Mass and also led the Eucharistic Adoration. The English Mass at 5.00 pm was celebrated by Fr Michael Morris from St Joseph’s Monastery, and the final Mass at 7.45 pm in Kannada was celebrated by Fr Harry D’Souza from St Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu.

In the evening, a solemn procession of the Infant Jesus with the recitation of the Rosary, meditating on the life of the Infant Jesus, drew a large number of devotees and added a devotional and festive atmosphere to the Shrine.

The day was specially dedicated to choir members, musicians, composers, lyricists, and music arrangers, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the spiritual life and celebrations of the Shrine.

Throughout the day, the Shrine remained a vibrant centre of prayer, reflection, music, and compassionate service.
