New Delhi, Jan 1: Marking the beginning of the New Year, chief of army staff (COAS) general Upendra Dwivedi on Thursday reflected on the Indian Army’s recent operational successes and its continuing role in safeguarding national security. In his message to the nation, he recalled Operation Sindoor, under which the Army delivered what he described as a strong and decisive response to hostile intentions, and stressed that the anti-terror campaign remains active even today.

In his New Year address, the Army Chief said that firm action taken last year had effectively countered the enemy’s “nefarious designs,” underlining that Operation Sindoor is not a closed chapter but an ongoing effort. His remarks reinforced the Army’s continued commitment to maintaining pressure against threats to peace and stability.

Beyond border security, General Dwivedi highlighted the Army’s broader contribution to the country. He noted that, alongside constant vigilance along the frontiers, the Indian Army has played a crucial role in national development by responding swiftly to natural disasters and participating in various nation-building activities within the country.

Calling for continued public support, the COAS expressed gratitude to citizens for their trust and cooperation, describing it as the Army’s greatest strength. He emphasised that the collective efforts of the armed forces and the people are essential in achieving the national vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047.” He assured citizens that the Indian Army would continue to contribute not only to national security but also to long-term development and resilience.

The Army Chief also shed light on the ongoing modernisation of the force, describing the present period as a “decade of transformation” for the Indian Army. He said this transformation is anchored on three key pillars—jointness among the armed forces, self-reliance through indigenisation, and innovation. According to him, the effective adoption of indigenous technologies, fresh ideas, and continuous upgrades is making the Army more capable and better prepared for future challenges.

In his message, written in Hindi, General Dwivedi underlined the growing importance of networking and data-centric systems in strengthening operational effectiveness. These elements, he said, are giving fresh momentum to the Army’s transformation by enabling faster decision-making and enhanced coordination.

In line with this vision, the Indian Army has officially declared 2026 as the “Year of Networking and Data Centricity.” Announcing the initiative, the Army said that as part of its broader Decade of Transformation, the focus on digital integration, indigenisation, and defence modernisation will significantly enhance connectivity, real-time situational awareness, and combat effectiveness. The initiative is aimed at building a more agile, resilient, and future-ready force.

Earlier in the day, General Dwivedi visited the Base Hospital at Delhi Cantonment, where he interacted with serving soldiers and veterans undergoing treatment. He praised their courage and determination in the face of adversity and conveyed his best wishes for their speedy recovery.

During the visit, the COAS also commended the medical officers and paramedical staff for their dedication and professionalism. The Indian Army, in a social media message, acknowledged their tireless efforts and selfless service in providing compassionate care to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, reaffirming the importance of medical support in maintaining the overall strength and morale of the force.
