New Year revelry under watch: Delhi Police issue 868 drunk-driving challans

New Delhi, Jan 1: The Delhi Traffic Police issued as many as 868 challans for drunken driving on New Year’s Eve as part of a massive enforcement drive to ensure road safety and maintain public order, officials said on Thursday.

Special traffic enforcement teams were deployed across major arterial roads, nightlife hotspots and residential areas to check drunken driving, overspeeding, dangerous motorcycle stunts and other traffic violations. Breathalyser tests were conducted at several checkpoints throughout the night, with teams frequently changing locations to prevent motorists from evading checks.

In parallel, the Delhi Police mobilised around 20,000 personnel across the city to maintain law and order during New Year celebrations. Authorities also relied on extensive CCTV surveillance and real-time coordination between district control rooms to closely monitor crowd movement and respond promptly to any untoward incident.

Police said special focus was given to crowd-prone areas such as Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Aerocity, which traditionally witness heavy footfall during New Year festivities.

Officials said the intensive drive was not only aimed at penalising offenders but also at sending out a strong deterrent message against drunken driving, which continues to be one of the leading causes of road accidents in the national capital.
