Nandini Chakravorty becomes West Bengal’s first woman chief secretary

Kolkata, Jan 1: Nandini Chakravorty was on Wednesday appointed as the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, creating history as the first woman to hold the state’s top bureaucratic post, a senior official said.

She succeeds Manoj Pant, who was due to retire on June 30 but was earlier granted a six-month extension from July 1 to December 31. Following the reshuffle, Pant has been appointed as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister in the rank of Chief Secretary.

Chakravorty, who was serving as the state’s Home Secretary, has been replaced by Jagdish Prasad Meena, the official added.

In a series of separate notifications, the state government also assigned additional responsibilities to several senior IAS officers as part of a broader administrative reshuffle.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Sundarban Affairs Department, Atri Bhattacharya, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Director General of the Netaji Subhas Administrative Training Institute.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Non-Conventional and Renewable Energy Sources Department, Barun Kumar Ray, has been given the additional responsibility of the Tourism Department.

Principal Secretary of the Public Health Engineering Department, Surendra Gupta, was assigned the additional charge of Divisional Commissioner of the Presidency Division.

Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary of the North Bengal Development Department, Dushyant Nariala, has been given additional charge as Principal Secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), along with the Correctional Administration Department, another notification said.
