Udupi, Dec 29: A second-year PU student from Balkattu in Hirebettu village allegedly died by suicide after being upset over being advised to concentrate on her studies.

The deceased has been identified as Samanvi, a resident of Balkattu. She was pursuing her II PUC education.

According to sources, on the evening of December 26, Samanvi’s mother advised her to prepare for her forthcoming examinations after noticing that she was engaged on her mobile phone instead of studying. It is learnt that the mother spoke to her in a corrective manner during the interaction.

Upset over the incident, Samanvi allegedly attempted suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in the bedroom of her house.

Family members immediately noticed the incident and rushed her to Manipal Hospital for treatment. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed while undergoing treatment after remaining in a critical condition.

A case has been registered at the Manipal police station, and further investigation is in progress.

R.I.P Samanvi. An overwhelming number of all parents in India or any where around the world would give the same advice to their children. Many decades ago when we were growing up, we were told a few times and if we didn't follow instructions, then we were beaten. But today's parents may are just giving advise, so don't see the need to take such an extreme step.

I feel very sad to see a young life is lost. May her soul rest in peace. Parents seeing this case don't worry to advice your children to be away from phone and concentrate on their studies, one, two, few or some cases like this definitely happens. It is most important for every parent to guide their children to the right path for their better future. If not repenting later may be too late. Remember the famous Kannada proverb "Gidavagi Baggadu Maravagi Baggite?" (ಗಿಡವಾಗಿ ಬಗ್ಗದ್ದು ಮರವಾಗಿ ಬಗ್ಗೀತೆ?)

It is not old times? Today's kids want to take their own choices. The parents must understand this and let their children choose their future the way they want, provided they remain within the family values. West has adopted this policy and their kids are independent even before they complete their high school studies. This change will take a lot of time to adjust. But, ultimately, elders will have to accede to this change. Sad, but true. Condolences to the bereaved family.

Very sad. I am sorry to say, but I feel the family members were mentally torturing her. People don't take extreme steps over just one conflict. She must have been suffering for a long time.

Anil Mangalore Dear Anil ,its not parents tortured her mentally. Here is something wrong.Parents duty is to bring up children in right way.All parents advice that.Nowadays after this mobiles are on market ,almost all children dont keep down this phone as if there is nothing else matters them.Even adults too.Just hear around how many children suicided because parents were against long talk but neglect rest?I am sure something went wrong between her partner o phone and she was upset ,same time mother too told her to concentrate on study .Just find out who was on the line and clear.May God give enough strenght to family to bear the loss and may her soul rest in peace.By doing this children dont understand what pain then give to parents for life long.
