Budaun, Dec 29: Nearly 200 residents of Piprauli village in Uttar Pradesh received rabies vaccinations as a precaution after discovering that the raita served at a recent funeral was made from the milk of a buffalo bitten by a dog.
The incident came to light after the buffalo, which had been bitten a few days earlier, died on December 26. Villagers, who had consumed the raita during the funeral on December 23, rushed to the Ujhani Community Health Centre for vaccinations amid fear of infection.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Rameshwar Mishra clarified that while boiling milk normally eliminates the risk of rabies, the preventive injections were administered to ensure safety. “Prevention is better than cure. Everyone with any doubts was given the anti-rabies vaccine,” he said.
The health department confirmed that no disease has spread in the village so far and the situation remains under control. The community health centre was kept open over the weekend to facilitate vaccinations, and authorities are monitoring the village to prevent panic or rumors.
Villager Dharmpal said, “The buffalo was bitten by a dog, fell ill, and later died. People got vaccinated as a precaution since the raita was made from its milk.”
