Sullia, Dec 27: A 22-year-old woman from Sullia, who was employed with a private cooperative society in Puttur, died due to a brain haemorrhage. In a deeply humane gesture, her family chose to donate her organs, giving a new lease of life to several patients.
The deceased has been identified as Sindhu, daughter of Mamatha, a resident of Rathabeedi, Sullia. She is survived by her mother and sister.

According to sources, Sindhu was returning to Sullia from Puttur by bus after work on December 16 when she slipped from her seat at Adkar. Fellow passengers immediately helped her and she was rushed to the Sullia government hospital, from where she was shifted to a private hospital. Doctors later detected neurological complications, following which she was taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.
She underwent surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Although she briefly regained consciousness, her brain later became completely non-functional and she slipped into a coma.
Despite complete brain failure, her vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and eyes were preserved with the support of life-sustaining equipment. After discussions with family members, Sindhu’s mother Mamatha took the courageous decision to donate her daughter’s organs, stating that it would help save other lives.
Accordingly, organs were donated to Apollo Hospital, Mysuru, and hospitals including Nitte, AJ and KMC in Mangaluru.
To facilitate swift transport, ambulance drivers along the Mani–Mysuru highway halted their vehicles and ensured a clear passage for the ambulance carrying Sindhu’s organs from Mangaluru to Mysuru. The organs were transported under a zero-traffic corridor.
Mamatha, a daily wage worker, had been living in Jattippalla with her husband and children. Her husband Seetharama had suffered a fall several years ago, battled illness and passed away two years ago. Despite hardships, Mamatha ensured her children’s education, arranged the marriage of one daughter and secured employment for Sindhu. In this moment of profound grief, her decision to donate her daughter’s organs has drawn widespread appreciation, with many hailing her as a symbol of courage, compassion and humanity.
