Mumbai, Dec 16: A man allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself on fire outside the premises of the Bombay High Court here on Monday evening, police said.

Police personnel and passersby promptly intervened and managed to douse the flames. The man, identified as Prakash Sawant, was immediately rushed to a state-run hospital in south Mumbai, where doctors found that he had sustained around 50 per cent burn injuries, an official said.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was triggered by a dispute between Sawant, a resident of Kankavali in coastal Sindhudurg district, and a lawyer over filing a case in the High Court. Sawant had allegedly paid Rs 80,000 to the lawyer for filing the case, but it was not done, police said.

Azad Maidan Police have registered a case and are probing the incident further.
