Laughing gas shows rapid relief for severe depression, study finds

New Delhi, Dec 7: Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, may offer immediate relief for depressive symptoms, according to a recent study published in eBioMedicine. Researchers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford found that a single dose of nitrous oxide can significantly reduce symptoms within 24 hours.

Consultant psychiatrist Steven Marwaha from the University of Birmingham said, “This population has often lost hope of recovery, making the results of this study particularly exciting. These findings highlight the urgent need for new treatments that can complement existing care pathways.”

Nitrous oxide is believed to target glutamate receptors in the brain, similar to ketamine, helping restore normal brain function and providing rapid symptom relief. The study analysed seven clinical trials involving 247 participants and found that a single 50% dose reduced depressive symptoms within a day, while repeated doses over weeks led to longer-lasting improvements.

Researchers noted that side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, and headaches, were generally mild and temporary, though higher doses increased their likelihood. Clinical psychologist Kiranpreet Gill said, “Our analyses show that nitrous oxide could form part of a new generation of rapid-acting treatments for depression.”

While the findings are promising, the researchers emphasised the need for further studies to determine optimal dosing strategies and how best to integrate nitrous oxide into existing treatment plans.
