From beedi roller’s son to UPSC topper: Saikiran’s grit-fuelled rise to success

Telangana, Dec 6: From a small village in Telangana to securing an All-India Rank of 27 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, Nandala Saikiran’s journey is a powerful reminder that dreams need determination, not privileged beginnings.

Growing up in Velichala village of Ramadugu mandal, Saikiran witnessed hardship early in life. After the loss of his father during his engineering days at NIT Warangal, the responsibility of running the household fell entirely on his mother, Laxmi, who rolled beedies to support his education. Her resilience became the foundation of his ambition.

Driven by a childhood dream of becoming a collector, Saikiran focused intensely on his studies at Saraswati School, later at Teja Residential School, and then at Trinity Junior College in Karimnagar. After completing his BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, he joined Qualcomm as a hardware engineer in Hyderabad. Yet, his heart remained anchored to one goal—Civil Services.

In 2021, he began preparing for the UPSC exam without traditional coaching, relying solely on online resources, toppers’ interviews, and expert evaluations. His first attempt in 2022 did not bring the expected results. But instead of stepping back, he stepped up—resigning from his job to give his full attention to the exam.

With disciplined self-study, long hours on weekends and holidays, and unwavering focus, Saikiran turned his second attempt in 2023 into a resounding success. He credits every bit of it to his mother’s sacrifices, saying her strength fuelled his perseverance.

Today, Saikiran’s achievement has turned him into a role model across Telangana. His village, Velichala, celebrated him with pride, and leaders including former Chopadandi MLA Sunke Ravishankar honoured him for his accomplishment.

Saikiran’s story proves one thing unmistakably—success bows to those who refuse to give up, no matter how difficult the path.
