Udupi: Two Bihar men held in online fraud case; cash, valuables seized

Udupi, Dec 1: Udupi district CEN police arrested two accused from Bihar in connection with an online fraud case involving several lakhs of rupees, and recovered cash and valuables worth Rs 6,15,000 from their possession.

The arrested have been identified as Dev Harsh (20) of Patna district and Chandan Kumar (29) of Nalanda district in Bihar. Police recovered 10 mobile phones worth Rs 97,000, four laptops worth Rs 68,000, and Rs 4,50,000 in cash from them.

According to police, Avinash had applied online for a Campa Cola franchise under Reliance Industries. A few days after submitting the application, he received calls and emails asking for more details and documents. Believing the communication to be genuine, he sent his educational certificates, bank details, and Aadhaar card. He was then informed that his application had been accepted, and as instructed by the accused, he transferred Rs 5,72,500 in phases towards registration and product booking to the bank accounts provided.

When the accused repeatedly demanded more money, Avinash grew suspicious. Realising he had been cheated, he filed a complaint stating that the fraudsters had taken Rs 5,72,500 by falsely promising him a Campa Cola franchise. A case was registered at Udupi CEN police station.

Acting on the complaint, police teams conducted operations in Patna and Bengaluru, managing to trace and arrest the accused.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of assistant superintendent of police Dr Harsha Priyamvada. Police circle inspector Nilesh G Chavhan, police sub-inspector Ashok Kumar, and CEN station staff Raghavendra Karkada, Praveen Kumar, Praveen Shettigar, Rajesh, Deekshith, ASI Umesh Jogi, Yatheen, Venkatesh, Dharmappa, Hemaraj, Nilesh, Pavan and Dinesh were part of the team.
