Mangaluru, Nov 30: The state government's Shakti scheme guarantees free travel for women on Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. However, the scheme appears to have created confusion regarding seats reserved for women. A case in point was an incident reported on the 8 am Mangaluru–Mysuru bus (KA 19 F 3196) on Saturday, where male passengers were found occupying women’s reserved seats despite several seats being vacant.
When a woman passenger drew the attention of the bus conductor and requested that the men be asked to move to other seats, the conductor allegedly responded irresponsibly. According to the complaint, the conductor replied, “Women are travelling free across the state. After the free bus scheme began, there is no special reservation for women. Sit wherever you find an empty seat.”

The woman reportedly requested the male passenger politely, saying, “This is a seat reserved for women, please move to another seat.” However, the man is said to have reacted dismissively. Instead of addressing the situation and ensuring order, the conductor allegedly sided with the male passenger, worsening the situation.
The incident has sparked reactions from the public, many of whom stressed the need to ensure safety and respect for women and to uphold the rights granted to them in public transport. The conductor’s indifferent attitude has drawn criticism from passengers.
