Kozhikode, Nov 29: A fire broke out at the new C-Block of Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH) on Saturday morning, triggering panic among patients and bystanders. Thanks to the swift response of hospital staff and fire services, a major tragedy was averted.
The fire started around 9:45 am in the air-conditioning systems on the ninth floor of the newly constructed C-Block. Hospital authorities stated that the affected section was under construction/maintenance and no patients were admitted in that area.

However, thick plumes of smoke quickly spread to nearby floors and corridors, setting off alarms throughout the hospital located near the Kozhikode Moffusil bus stand.
Hospital staff immediately initiated evacuation procedures. Patients from the eighth floor, including those who had recently undergone surgery, were safely shifted to secure areas.
"We were able to shift patients without difficulty," a hospital official confirmed.
Abdul Hameed from Ulliyeri, who had come to accompany his mother, said, "The fire broke out suddenly. We noticed smoke and informed the hospital authorities."
The Fire and Rescue Services reached the spot promptly, deploying five units. After intense efforts, the fire was brought under control by 10:30 am, preventing it from spreading to other critical sections of the hospital. Firefighters continued clearing heavy smoke from the floors for some time.
While no casualties were reported, hospital operations faced temporary disruption. Preliminary assessments suggest a short circuit may have triggered the fire. A detailed investigation into the exact cause and extent of damage is underway.
