Mangaluru: Indiana Hospital introduces laser angioplasty, achieves breakthrough for Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Nov 29: Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute, Mangaluru, created a historic moment with the launch of Laser Angioplasty, introducing this advanced cardiac treatment for the first time in Dakshina Kannada (DK). The grand event was held on Friday at Vivanta by Taj, Old Port Road.

The dignitaries were welcomed with flower bouquets. The programme was graced by Darshan H V, IAS, deputy commissioner, Dr Bhagavan B C, vice chancellor, RGUHS, and Dr U T Ifthikar Ali Fareed, chairman, Karnataka State Allied & Healthcare Council.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Bhagavan B C congratulated Indiana Hospital for achieving a major breakthrough in cardiac care. “Laser Angioplasty is a significant leap forward, offering unmatched precision and safety, especially in cases where conventional angioplasty falls short,” he said.

He praised Dr Yusuf A Kumble and his team for bringing this technology to the region, adding that India continues to lead in adopting advanced medical innovations. He appreciated Indiana Hospital's achievements, including performing over 12,000 angioplasties and pioneering major valve procedures, calling the launch ‘a new milestone that elevates healthcare standards in Dakshina Kannada’.

Earlier, Dr Yusuf A Kumble, managing director, explained how laser angioplasty works, highlighting that the Philips Nexcimer Laser System enables accurate removal of complex blocks that cannot be treated with balloons alone.

A special felicitation ceremony was organised by Fathima Foundation Trust honouring Dr Yusuf A Kumble for his contributions to advanced cardiac healthcare and patient-centric innovation.

The event saw the participation of family members, friends, doctors, well-wishers, and the extended Indiana Hospital community, making the occasion even more memorable.

Key members of Indiana Hospital, including Prof Dr Ali Kumble, Dr Nihal Ali Kumble, Dr Apoorva Srijayadeva, and Dr Aditya Bharadwaj, were present.

With the introduction of laser angioplasty, Indiana Hospital now stands among the leading centres of cardiovascular excellence in Karnataka.
