Mangaluru, Nov 29: The central and state governments have admitted before the high court that the mobile network issues in parts of the city are linked to the mobile jammer installed at the district prison in Kodialbail, Mangaluru. The court has directed both governments to officially submit details of the remedial measures undertaken by December 1.
The Mangaluru Bar Association had approached the high court regarding the issue. Following the court’s earlier direction, telecom company officials visited the Mangaluru jail and surrounding areas, studied the network disruptions caused by the jammer, and submitted a report.

During the hearing, counsels representing both the central and state governments presented their arguments. The union government’s department of telecommunications has written to the state prison department, instructing it to take necessary steps to resolve the issue and has provided details on the network disruptions caused by the jammer. Meanwhile, the state prison department has also written to the central telecommunications division, requesting action to address the problem.
Advocate P P Hegde, representing the bar association, argued that although there is a jammer inside the Mangaluru jail, mobile networks continue to function properly within the premises. However, within a 900-metre radius outside the jail—an area that includes offices, courts, associations, banks, and colleges—mobile network disruptions have intensified. He argued that the jail jammer should therefore be removed.
After hearing all arguments, the court instructed both the central and state governments to officially submit by December 1 the measures being taken to resolve the network problems caused by the jail jammer.
