Mumbai, Nov 24: Indian cinema has lost one of its tallest and most beloved icons. Dharmendra, the 89-year-old veteran revered as one of Bollywood’s finest and most charismatic stars, has passed away, sources confirmed on Monday, November 24.

The actor had recently been discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on November 12, where he had been under close medical supervision. At the time, doctors reported that he was stable and recovering at home. Dr Rajiv Sharma, who oversaw his treatment, had urged the public not to circulate unfounded rumours about the actor’s condition, adding that Dharmendra left the hospital “fully satisfied” with his care.

Dharmendra had been admitted earlier on November 10, with sources indicating he was critical and placed on life support. Prior to that, he had been under strict observation since October 31.

Fondly known as the “He-Man of Indian Cinema,” the screen legend would have turned 90 on December 8.

A star whose brilliance defined generations

With a career spanning over 60 years and more than 300 films, Dharmendra remains etched in the collective memory of Indian cinema lovers. Hailed as one of the most handsome and commercially successful actors in Bollywood’s history, he delivered an unmatched number of hit films—a record that still stands tall.

Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012, Dharmendra’s journey began with his 1960 debut Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. He rose to fame in the mid-1960s with films such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, and Aaye Din Bahar Ke.

The late ’60s through the ’80s marked his golden era, featuring legendary roles in classics like:

• Sholay
• Mera Gaon Mera Desh
• Yaadon Ki Baaraat
• Jugnu
• Seeta Aur Geeta
• Charas
• Dharam Veer
• Chupke Chupke
• The Burning Train
• Pratiggya

His versatility allowed him to transition seamlessly from intense drama to action to effortless comedy—a rare feat even today.

A graceful second innings

In the 1990s and 2000s, Dharmendra reinvented himself with acclaimed supporting and character roles in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Johnny Gaddaar, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, and most recently, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024).

His upcoming film Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Agastya Nanda, was set for release in December. The war drama is based on the life of Param Vir Chakra recipient Arun Khetarpal.

An irreplaceable loss

Dharmendra’s passing closes a monumental chapter in Hindi cinema. His charm, warmth, humility, and iconic on-screen presence made him a beloved figure across generations. Fans, colleagues, and industry veterans are expected to share their tributes as the nation mourns the loss of its “He-Man” and eternal romantic hero.

He was the storm in Phool Aur Patthar, the soul of Satyakam, and the laughter in Chupke Chupke. As Veeru in Sholay, he gave us friendship goals for a lifetime. With Anupama, he showed us silence could speak volumes. Today, as we say goodbye, we remember not just an actor—but a man who made masculinity tender, and stardom humble. Dharam ji, aap jaise na koi tha, na hoga.
