Mangaluru, Nov 21: The post-centenary silver jubilee celebration of Sacred Heart Church, Surathkal was held with great devotion, unity, and gratitude on Thursday, November 20. The parish community joyfully gathered to celebrate 125 years of God’s blessings and the rich spiritual journey of the church.
The celebration began with the jubilee Thanksgiving Holy Mass, which was solemnly presided over by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore. In his inspiring homily, the bishop reflected on the deep faith of the parishioners, the sacrifices of the missionaries, and the steady growth of the church over the past 125 years. A large number of faithful participated in the Eucharistic celebration with devotion, thanking the Sacred Heart of Jesus for his love and compassion.
Following the Holy Mass, a felicitation programme was held at 11:30 am in the Church Sabhabhavan. The programme was presided over by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha. The chief guests for the occasion were Ivan D’Souza, MLC, Government of Karnataka, and Sr Valsa, CA OP, Regional Delegate, Union of St Catherine of Siena, School Missionaries. They addressed the gathering and appreciated the rich heritage of the parish and the dedicated service of its members.
The dignitaries, Fr Austin Peter Peres (parish priest) and Fr Johnson Denzil Pereira (assistant parish priest) Russel Roche (vice president), Asha Pinto (secretary), and Norbert Misquith (Coordinator of 21 Commission) were present on the dais.
Former priests of the parish Fr Antony Lobo, Fr Fredrick Monteiro and Fr Richard D’Souza were honoured and felicitated. Former vice presidents, secretaries and Gurkars were also felicitated during the programme.
A commemorative souvenir was also released on this occasion, showcasing the significant events and contributions of the parish over the years.
Fr Austin Peter Peres welcomed the gathering. Asha Pinto presented the brief history of the church. Russel Roche proposed vote of thanks. Lawrence D’Souza and Sonia D’Mello compered the programme. The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal.
