Yenepoya University clarifies: No official study confirming anticancer properties in arecanut

Media Release

Mangaluru, Nov 15: Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) has issued an important clarification after a press release by the president of CAMPCO cited one of its faculty researchers and claimed findings related to “in vitro anticancer potential properties in arecanut”. The statement, which received wide publicity across media platforms, has prompted the university to set the record straight.

According to the official clarification, Yenepoya University immediately sought details from the concerned research faculty. It was found that the researcher had shared a preliminary and informal discussion with the CAMPCO president, during which early-stage observations were mentioned. The university emphasised that the findings were based on minimal samples, making the study “highly inadequate” to claim that arecanut possesses anticancer properties.

The university categorically stated that it does not concur with the interpretation highlighted in CAMPCO's press release. It further clarified that neither Yenepoya University nor its research centre had issued any official communication or endorsement of such claims.

The clarification note stressed that:

• No formal study supporting anticancer benefits of arecanut has been completed.

• The sample size of the initial test was insufficient for any scientific conclusion.

• CAMPCO did not seek prior approval from the university before issuing the press note.

• No official collaboration or understanding exists between Yenepoya University and CAMPCO regarding media statements or publications.

Yenepoya University concluded by stating that this clarification is being issued to inform and guide the public accurately, ensuring that no misleading scientific claims are attributed to the institution.
