Joshal D’Souza – A journey of passion and perseverance
Joshal discovered her passion for music at the age of six in her small village of Ujire. However, continuing her musical journey was not easy. With limited opportunities to learn music in her village, she travelled over 150 kilometres to Mangaluru in 1998 to study Carnatic vocals at the Sandesha Institute during her summer holidays.
After completing her Bachelor of Engineering, Joshal moved to the UAE to advance her professional career. Despite her work commitments, her love for music never wavered. In 2012, she resumed her Carnatic classical music training under the guidance of the Golden Music Institute in Abu Dhabi, successfully balancing her profession and passion.
Joshal’s talent shone through when she won the prestigious ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore – 2014’ singing competition. This achievement opened doors for her to lend her voice to numerous Konkani devotional hymns and album songs composed by renowned musicians and directors. To date, she has recorded over 300 songs in various languages and has performed at numerous live concerts across India and the Gulf countries.
After returning to India, Joshal expanded her career into acting, featuring in several popular Konkani serials aired on Daijiworld TV.
A trained singer and performer, she has also served as a judge for several singing competitions in Mangaluru and Udupi, including popular Konkani reality shows such as ‘JigiBigi Taram SOAD-5’ and ‘Trio Singing Stars’. More recently, she has ventured into music composition, with one of her works being selected for Vision Konkani’s ‘New Era of Konkani Music’ project.
Joshal is also recognised as a fine actress in the Konkani entertainment industry. Her notable serials include ‘Makai Na Tukai Na’, ‘Mrs. Meena’ and ‘GodFather’, while her featured film ‘Bapache Putache Navim’ has been making waves in Konkani cinema.
Alongside her musical and acting pursuits, Joshal has been teaching music to children for the past three years in affiliation with the Veenadhari Institute, Bengaluru. Currently, around 200 students from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Mumbai, and even from overseas (NRI students) attend her classes online.
She now runs the Sumadhur Sangeeth Academy (R), which not only trains budding singers but also prepares them to compete in various reality shows, prestigious competitions, and television programmes.
