Srinivas University organizes 'Rabies Awareness Programme'

Mangaluru, Nov 11: The Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Srinivas University, Mukka, organized a 'Rabies Awareness Programme' on October 30 at the Srinivas University Campus, Mukka.

The chief guest and guest speaker for the day was Amrut R H, associate professor (MPH), IAHS, Mukka. The programme was graced by the presence of Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy (dean, Institute of Allied Health Sciences), faculty members, and students from various departments.

The programme commenced with a prayer song led by Thrupthi & team. The welcome address was delivered by K V Pooja (assistant professor, department of medical laboratory technology), who warmly welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of the event.

The significance of the day was presented by Maureen Edwards (assistant professor, microbiology), who emphasized the importance of awareness, prevention, and vaccination in controlling rabies, in line with this year’s theme — “Act now: You, me and the community.”

The guest talk was delivered by Amrut R H, who shared valuable insights on rabies transmission, preventive strategies, and the role of vaccination in eliminating rabies-related deaths. His session was highly informative and encouraged active community participation in rabies control measures.

Following the talk, Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy addressed the gathering, appreciating the department’s efforts in organizing such a meaningful awareness initiative and highlighting the importance of continued public education on zoonotic diseases.

As part of the programme, quiz and poster competitions were organized to engage students and spread awareness creatively.

The quiz competition, conducted on October 29, was led by Prof Rohan Fernandez as the quiz master. 6 teams out of 20 were selected for the final round from various departments and they participated enthusiastically in multiple rounds that tested their knowledge on rabies, vaccination, and general microbiology.

The poster competition was held on October 30, encouraging students to portray messages on rabies prevention, awareness, and vaccination through visual creativity. 18 teams participated for this competition.

During the prize distribution ceremony, winners of both the competitions were felicitated by Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy (dean, IAHS) & Amrut R H.

First prize: Nayak Kavya Kirtikumar & Afiya Rahim – 5th semester BSc CVT

Second prize: Rifa nasrin K & Afra abdulla - 5th semester BSc AOTT

Third prize: Shafaqat Shabir War & Megha V – 1st semester MSc MLT

Poster competition winners

First prize: Suraj Rakesh & Irfana Nazrin A S – 3rd semester BSc CVT

Second prize: Riya Febin & Shiya Rahmath – 3rd semester BSc NS

Third prize: Devika Binu & Nishma Leena Nazareth – 5th semester BSc PA

The vote of thanks was proposed by Manisha Kumari from the department of medical laboratory technology, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guest speaker, dean, faculty, and students for their active participation and support.

The event concluded successfully with an oath to spread awareness and promote vaccination to achieve a rabies-free community.

The convenor of the programme was Maureen Edwards (assistant professor, microbiology), and the co-convenors were K V Pooja (assistant professor, department of MLT) and Manisha Kumari (assistant professor, department of MLT).
