Changing weather in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi; sparks fear of infectious diseases

Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 10: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi have been experiencing fluctuating weather conditions over the past few days.

Mornings have turned slightly cold, afternoons remain hot and sunny, while evenings bring cloudy skies followed by sporadic rainfall in some areas. This sudden shift in weather has led to a rise in cold, fever, and other infectious illnesses among the public.

Doctors have reported an increase in patients suffering from throat pain, cold, cough, and fever, with many children being affected. Hospitals and clinics have seen a steady rise in outpatient numbers.

Although the region received good rainfall earlier, the current dry spell has left stagnant water in several areas, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes that spread dengue. Authorities have therefore urged residents to take preventive measures to safeguard against mosquito-borne diseases.

The health department has launched door-to-door surveys to prevent the spread of infections and to create awareness among residents. Schools have been instructed to maintain hygiene, and children are being advised to follow preventive health measures.

Surveillance has also been intensified on migrant workers, with instructions issued to building owners to ensure mandatory health check-ups for all workers.

As part of precautionary measures, residents are advised to keep their surroundings clean and dry, wash hands and feet regularly, consume foods that boost immunity, drink hot water and eat freshly cooked food. They should consult a doctor immediately if any symptoms appear, avoid taking medication without medical advice, and refrain from sending children showing signs of infection to school.
