London, Nov 2: At least nine people are being treated for life-threatening injuries following a series of stabbings aboard a train near Cambridge in eastern England on Saturday evening, police confirmed. Two suspected attackers have been arrested, and counterterrorism officers are assisting with the investigation.
According to British Transport Police (BTP), the attack occurred on an LNER service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross at around 6:25 p.m., shortly after the train departed Peterborough station. Armed officers intercepted the train at Huntingdon station following reports of multiple assaults.
“We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further,” said BTP Chief Superintendent Chris Casey, adding that it was “too early to speculate” about the motive.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary said officers received reports at 7:39 p.m., and armed units quickly responded to stop the train and detain two men. Both suspects remain in police custody.
The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched a large-scale emergency response, including ambulances, tactical commanders, and a hazardous area response team. “We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to hospital,” a spokesperson said.
The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, called the incident “an appalling and deeply concerning attack,” thanking emergency services for their swift response.
“My thoughts are with all those affected. Anyone in the area should follow police advice,” he said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also expressed her sorrow, confirming she was receiving regular updates.
“Two suspects have been immediately arrested and taken into custody. I urge people to avoid comment and speculation at this early stage,” she posted.
London North Eastern Railway (LNER) confirmed that the incident took place aboard one of its trains and warned passengers of major disruption. National Rail announced that Huntingdon station has been closed and all lines blocked. LNER said services in the area are expected to remain affected until Monday, advising passengers:
“We are experiencing major disruption across the LNER route. Our advice is ‘Do Not Travel’. Please defer your travel where you can.”
As investigations continue, police and counterterrorism officials are working to determine whether the attack was coordinated or motivated by extremist intent. The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while authorities assess the situation.
