Sullia, Oct 30: Joy turned to horror on Thursday morning when a tempo carrying wedding guests to a ceremony in Kukke Subrahmanya overturned at a sharp bend on the Bisile Ghat Road, leaving more than 20 people injured — several of them critically.

The wedding was to be held at Adi Subrahmanya, between a groom from Vanagoor in Kuduraste and a bride from Anekallu. The bride and groom had arrived at the wedding hall the previous day, while the groom’s relatives were en route in a tempo when tragedy struck.

According to witnesses, the vehicle lost control at Bille Curve and plunged nearly 20 feet down a steep slope, flipping over before coming to a halt. “There were screams and chaos everywhere — locals rushed to help even before the ambulances arrived,” said a resident who witnessed the rescue operation.

More than 20 passengers sustained injuries, with several suffering serious fractures and head injuries. All the injured were given first aid at the Subrahmanya Primary Health Centre before being shifted in six ambulances to hospitals in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

Local residents and emergency teams acted swiftly, pulling the injured from the mangled vehicle and assisting in the rescue effort. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

A health official at Subrahmanya PHC said, “We provided immediate treatment to stabilise the patients before transferring them. Some are in a very serious condition.”
