Mangaluru, Oct 30: Young musician Reuben Jason Machado from Mangaluru entered the Golden Book of World Records by performing the longest back stroke swimming while playing the flute at the St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) swimming pool on October 29.
Dr Manish Vishnoi, Asia head of the Golden Book of World Records, formally announced the achievement, confirming that Reuben covered more than 700m back stroke swimming which is a feat never before attempted or recorded in the Golden Book of World Records. He presented a certificate and a medal, recognising the performance as a historic global first. "Initially, the target was 300m, but Reuben completed approximately 700m," said Dr Vishnoi.

"As per the Golden Book of World Records norms, the final measurement will be verified, but it is confirmed that he set a global record for the longest back float swim while playing the flute, covering over 700m. It's a unique and world-first accomplishment," he added.
Dr Praveen Martis, vice-chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), recalled Reuban’s approach regarding the idea of attempting a back stroke performance while playing the flute, two months ago and the concept was shared with Dr Vishnoi, whose encouragement and guidance enabled Reuben to turn this vision into reality.
Proposing the vote of thanks, Reuben said, "The idea came from my father, and I spent the past month practising back floating while playing the flute. I've been swimming for three years and studying music for over a decade."
His record-setting feat was witnessed by the staff of St Aloysius University as well as his parents, Richard and Jane Machado, and his wife, Anusha Jane D'Souza.
Manoj Dyson Fernandes, assistant professor of BBA compered the event.
