California, Oct 28: A tragic incident unfolded in Rancho Cucamonga, California, on Monday afternoon when San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez was fatally shot while responding to reports of an armed man threatening a woman.
According to police, the confrontation began around 12.37 pm on Hollyhock Drive, where Nunez and other deputies rushed to the scene following distress calls. The suspect, armed with a gun, opened fire, striking Nunez fatally before fleeing on a motorcycle.

A high-speed pursuit spanning several miles followed, with the suspect reportedly reaching speeds of over 150 mph on the 210 Freeway. In a dramatic end to the chase, an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle rammed the motorcycle, forcing the suspect to the ground. The police described it as a “pursuit intervention technique” executed by a narcotics deputy.
The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in stable condition. He will be booked for murder once medically cleared.
Deputy Nunez, who had served the department for six years, is survived by his pregnant wife and a two-year-old daughter. “We’re embedded in sorrow,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during a press briefing. “This has happened way too often. We’ve lost not only a colleague but a friend, a husband, and a father.”
Authorities said a memorial service for the fallen deputy will be announced soon. The tragic killing has reignited concerns about the growing risks faced by law enforcement officers responding to domestic threat calls in California’s Inland Empire region.
