Puttur, Oct 22: In a dramatic early morning incident near Bellichadavu in Ishwaramangala on the Karnataka–Kerala border, police opened fire and injured a man allegedly involved in illegal cattle transportation after he attempted to escape and rammed into a police jeep.

The injured accused has been identified as Abdullah (40), a native of Kasaragod, Kerala. He was reportedly transporting eleven cattle in an Eicher vehicle from Karnataka to Kerala along with another accused. When Puttur Rural police signalled the vehicle to stop, Abdullah allegedly ignored the order, prompting a chase that continued for nearly 10 kilometres.

During the pursuit, the accused rammed the Eicher vehicle into the police jeep from behind in an attempt to flee. In response, the PSI fired two rounds — one hitting the vehicle and the other striking Abdullah in the leg. The second accused managed to escape from the spot.

Police immediately shifted Abdullah to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment. Preliminary investigations revealed that Abdullah had a prior case registered against him under the Cow Slaughter Act (Case No. 33/2025) at Bellare police station.

Police sources said Abdullah, who was previously involved in cattle smuggling, had recently resumed his illegal activities. A new case has been registered at Puttur Rural police station, and an investigation is underway to trace the absconding accused.
