Chandigarh, Oct 21: A former Punjab minister Razia Sultana and her husband, ex-DGP Mohammed Mustafa, have been charged in the murder of their 33-year-old son Aqil Akhtar, days after he was found dead under mysterious circumstances at their Panchkula residence.
Aqil was rushed to a hospital after being found unconscious on Thursday, where he was declared dead. While the family claimed he died due to a drug overdose, police preliminary findings suggest he may have suffered health complications after consuming some medicine.

The investigation took a shocking turn with the emergence of a video recorded by Aqil in August and a statement from a family friend. In the video, Aqil alleged that his father was having an affair with his mother, claiming he was under extreme mental stress and trauma. He further accused his mother and sister of conspiring against him, saying, “Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or killed.”
Aqil also alleged that his father knew his wife before the marriage and that his family attempted to label him delusional to protect their image. He claimed his money was confiscated and warned that any step against them could result in false cases of rape or murder.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta said initial investigations had not pointed to foul play. However, complaints, social media posts, videos, and photographs prompted the filing of an FIR. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now been formed to probe allegations against Mohammed Mustafa, Razia Sultana, Aqil’s wife, and his sister.
The case has sent shockwaves through Punjab, raising serious questions about family disputes, alleged abuse of power, and the circumstances surrounding Aqil’s untimely death.
