J&K police seize drug peddler’s property in Kulgam under NDPS act

Srinagar, Oct 6: In a significant move against the rising drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, the Kulgam Police on Monday attached the property of a notorious drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

The action was taken against Cheki Badwani, a resident of Kurigam in Qazigund tehsil, who is currently lodged in Bhaderwah District Jail. Police said Badwani is a repeat offender involved in multiple drug trafficking cases, with no known legitimate source of income.

A police spokesperson stated that during the investigation of a case registered under Sections 8/15 and 21 of the NDPS Act at Qazigund Police Station, it was revealed that Badwani had illegally acquired a residential house—valued at approximately Rs 25 lakh—using funds from narcotics trade.

The property, located under Survey No. 797 min, was attached under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act, which empowers authorities to seize assets acquired through drug trafficking.

“This marks another determined step by Kulgam Police to dismantle drug networks and strike at the financial roots of narco-trafficking,” the police statement said.

The crackdown is part of a broader campaign by law enforcement to eradicate drug trafficking in the region. The move has reportedly been well-received by the local community, which has been grappling with the growing impact of substance abuse.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam, Sahil Sarangal, reaffirmed the district police’s commitment to making the region drug-free, stating:

“We are not only targeting the supply chain but also working to dismantle the financial infrastructure that enables these networks. This is crucial for protecting our youth and society.”

The Kulgam Police has also urged the public to report any drug-related activities in their areas, assuring that all shared information will be treated with strict confidentiality.

This latest enforcement action underscores a shift in strategy by authorities—focusing not just on arrests, but also on hitting traffickers where it hurts most: their illegally acquired assets.
