Mangaluru: Pickleball craze takes off as City gets first dedicated court at Bejai mall

Mangaluru, Sep 10: The coastal city of Mangaluru has officially caught on to India’s latest sporting sensation — pickleball.

With the inauguration of its first dedicated court, the city joins Bengaluru and other metros in embracing this fast-paced racquet sport that fuses elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.

Long known for its strong badminton and tennis culture, Mangaluru — or Kudla, as it is locally known — is now witnessing a sporting shift. Pickleball is swiftly becoming a favourite among residents of all ages, from young professionals to senior citizens, fitness enthusiasts to casual players.

The city’s pickleball journey began just three-four weeks ago, when ‘OneLve’ launched the first indoor facility at a mall in Bejai. The centre currently houses three courts, with two more under development.

“Our clientele is largely in their 30s and above,” said a facility manager who preferred to remain unnamed. “Many come here after work, paddle in hand, just to unwind with friends. It’s growing fast — people are discovering just how enjoyable and social this sport can be,” the manager added.

A unique blend of three racquet sports, pickleball is fast, fun, and surprisingly easy to pick up. The rallies are sharp, the learning curve gentle, and the experience, deeply satisfying.

“It’s not just about physical fitness — though it certainly improves agility, reflexes, and stamina. It’s also about mental clarity, focus, and above all, joy,” the official added.

Social connection is another key reason for its growing popularity. Unlike more intense competitive sports, pickleball encourages laughter, bonding, and a strong sense of community — a welcome antidote to modern-day stress.

According to Rajath Kankar M R, founder and general secretary of the Karnataka State Pickleball Association, the sport has seen exponential growth across the state in the last two years.

“Bengaluru alone now has over 400 pickleball courts, while another 100 have sprung up in nine districts, including Mangaluru,” he shared.

“Our association has been active for over a decade, and we’ve seen people from the age of eight to 80 taking up the paddle. People play for three key reasons — fitness, fun, and friendly competition.”

When asked about the safety of the sport, Kankar was quick to assure its low-risk appeal. “Pickleball is far gentler on the body compared to other racquet sports. Injuries are rare, and when they do occur, it’s usually due to unsuitable playing surfaces. Synthetic courts, like the ones being built in Mangaluru, are ideal.”

As the sport continues to gain traction, it appears Mangaluru’s new affair with pickleball is more than just a fleeting fad. With dedicated facilities, enthusiastic players, and community buzz, the sport is set to become a permanent fixture in the city’s athletic landscape.

And for many residents, it’s already more than a game — it’s their new way of life.
