Bengaluru, Sep 10: Chief minister Siddaramaiah has assured that the state government will recommend to the Centre a proposal to name one of Bengaluru’s metro stations after St Mary. His statement, made during the St Mary’s birthday celebrations in the city, has triggered strong opposition and widespread debate.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister said that the proposal to name a metro station as St Mary has been accepted. He added that a recommendation will be forwarded to the central government, and once the approval is granted, the official date for renaming will be announced.

Meanwhile, the announcement has stirred criticism across various quarters. On social media, some recalled that Shankar Nag, who envisioned Bengaluru’s metro system, had dreamt of transforming the city into another Singapore and had even invested in studying advanced technology for the project.
Despite his contribution, Shankar Nag’s name has not been honoured through the metro, and many feel that ignoring him is an injustice.
The decision has thus ignited a sharp divide between supporters of the St Mary proposal and those insisting that Shankar Nag deserves the honour.
