Gold smuggler caught with Rs 5 crore haul at India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 8: In a significant crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) arrested an Indian smuggler along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Nadia district and seized gold biscuits worth Rs 5 crore. Acting on a tip-off, troops from the 194 Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier apprehended the man near the Sunder Border Outpost. During a search, BSF personnel discovered 35 gold biscuits strapped around his waist.

The accused, who hails from Haritalapara village under the Dhantala police station limits, confessed during initial questioning that he had long been involved in the cross-border gold smuggling racket. Following his arrest, both the smuggler and the seized gold were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal action.

Officials said the interrogation yielded valuable information that could help track other members of the smuggling network. Investigators are now working to identify the kingpin operating behind the scenes of this organized racket.

BSF sources stressed that smuggled gold poses a serious threat to the national economy and is often linked to other illicit activities, including drug trafficking and terror financing. They emphasized the importance of breaking down these criminal networks to protect national interests.

This is the third major gold seizure in the region in recent days, pointing to the BSF’s heightened intelligence operations and round-the-clock vigilance along the sensitive international border. Authorities praised the troops’ swift and effective action, noting that consistent crackdowns are lowering the morale of smuggling operatives.

Residents living near the border have been urged to assist in the fight against smuggling by sharing credible information with the BSF. They can do so through the 'Seema Saathi' helpline at 14419 or by sending messages to WhatsApp number 9903472227. Officials assured that informants would be rewarded appropriately and their identities kept confidential.
