Bantwal: Illegal religious centre under fire for loud Azaan broadcasts without permission

Bantwal, Sept 7: A case has been filed at the Bantwal Rural police station against a recently constructed religious centre in Punchame, Kariyangala village, for operating without legal approval and allegedly using a loudspeaker system without permission.

The centre, reportedly functioning under the leadership of a man named Isaaq, is said to have been set up inside a building originally intended for religious education purposes.
Authorities now say the facility was built without necessary approvals and is being used as a religious place in violation of established regulations.

According to a formal complaint lodged with the police, the centre has installed a sound amplification system without obtaining official clearance. It is alleged that the Azaan (Islamic call to prayer) is being broadcast five times daily at volumes that exceed the prescribed legal limits, causing disturbance to nearby residents.

“This is not just a matter of volume,” said a local resident on condition of anonymity. “It’s about following the law. There are rules for using loudspeakers, especially in residential areas.”

Taking the matter seriously, the police obtained prior permission from the Court and on September 6, formally registered a case under the following sections:

• Crime Number: 133/2025

• Sections 37, 92(1), and 109 of the Karnataka Police Act

• Section 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)

Police have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the legality of the construction and the use of sound equipment at the location.

Officials stated that action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry, and further legal steps will follow if the violations are confirmed.
