Kyiv, Sep 7: Overnight Russian attacks across Ukraine killed at least four people and injured dozens more, authorities reported, with a government building in Kyiv catching fire during the strikes. The State Emergency Service posted images on Telegram showing firefighters tackling flames on an upper floor of a high-rise in the capital. At least two fatalities and 18 injuries were confirmed in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers building suffered damage to its roof and upper floors, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said, as helicopters flew overhead, reportedly dousing the blaze with water. A nationwide air alert had been declared at 6:06 am (0306 GMT).
Additional Russian drone attacks in Dnipropetrovsk killed a 54-year-old man and injured several others, while strikes in Sumy claimed one life, including a nine-year-old child. In Zaporizhzhia, at least 15 people were wounded, with four hospitalised, as residential buildings were damaged.
The attacks come amid stalled peace efforts, with Western-led pledges to deploy reassurance forces failing to gain traction. Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Western troops in Ukraine, warning they would be “legitimate” targets.
The ongoing conflict, triggered by Russia’s February 2022 invasion, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, leaving eastern and southern Ukraine severely devastated.
