Bengaluru, Sept 2: In a major tax recovery drive, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued notices to over 2.75 lac property owners who have failed to pay property tax over several years. The total outstanding amount stands at a staggering Rs 786 crore.
According to BBMP Special Commissioner (Revenue) Munish Moudgil, electronic demand notices have been sent to all defaulters. “Owners who have not paid taxes for several years have now been served notices digitally. They must pay their dues through the BBMP property tax portal – bbmptax.karnataka.gov.in” he said.
He further warned that if the dues are not cleared promptly, the BBMP will initiate strict enforcement measures. “Properties may be seized, and both movable and immovable assets could be auctioned to recover pending dues,” he added.
Zone-wise breakdown of defaulters:
-
Mahadevapura Zone: 65,000 defaulters
-
Bommanahalli Zone: 45,000
-
Rajarajeshwari Nagar Zone: 38,000
-

Dip in tax collection:
While the BBMP had collected Rs 2,424.93 crore in property tax during the first two months of the current financial year (2025–26), collections dipped significantly in the subsequent three months — with only Rs 786 crore collected in June, July, and August combined.
Officials cited the ongoing process of restructuring BBMP into the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the formation of five new municipal corporations as a key reason for the slowdown. “Verification of property tax records, issuance of e-khatas, and serving of show-cause notices have delayed the routine collection process,” a senior official said.
With digital enforcement now underway and legal consequences in motion, the BBMP hopes to make up for lost ground and significantly improve tax recovery in the coming months.
