Indore, Sep 2: In a shocking lapse of hospital hygiene, two newborn babies admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH), Indore, were bitten by rats inside the ICU, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The incidents came to light after nursing staff noticed injuries on the infants and later found rats moving inside the unit on CCTV footage. While one infant suffered bites on the fingers, another sustained injuries to the head and shoulder. Both babies were admitted last week, hospital sources said.

“This happened in the last 48 hours. The two babies are stable now. One of them had been abandoned in Khargone district and brought here for treatment. Both infants also have congenital deformities,” said Dr Ashok Yadav, hospital superintendent.

The hospital has now started installing iron nets on windows to block rodent entry. Authorities have also urged attendants not to bring food items inside wards to prevent further incidents.

The shocking development has raised serious concerns about patient safety and sanitation measures at one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest government hospitals.
