CM Siddaramaiah says no need for NIA probe in Dharmasthala case

Mysuru, Aug 31: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday ruled out the need for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the Dharmasthala incident, while also cautioning that reducing Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates could result in a loss of Rs 15,000 crore annually to the state exchequer.

Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, the CM stated that the investigation into the Dharmasthala case is progressing under a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and that there is no requirement to transfer the probe to the NIA.

“We have given the SIT full independence. We have not interfered. Let them do their job. The complaint was filed against Dharmasthala. The people deserve to know the truth,” Siddaramaiah said.

He criticised the BJP for politicising the matter. “Whether they go on religious pilgrimages to Dharmasthala or elsewhere, that is their choice. But SIT formation was welcomed even by Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala Sri Veerendra Heggade. We formed it so the truth could come out. Otherwise, doubts about Dharmasthala will persist,” he added.

The CM also noted that the complainant has given a statement before the court, and that many organisations had demanded a probe by an independent body like the SIT. “Even BJP leaders had welcomed the SIT when it was announced. But now they are playing politics over the issue,” he said.

GST rate cuts not viable, says CM

On the topic of GST reforms, Siddaramaiah said that while rationalisation of tax slabs is welcome, the Centre must also ensure states’ revenue interests are protected. “Reducing GST rates would lead to a loss of Rs 15,000 crore annually for Karnataka. This is not a small figure. Eight states have discussed this together, and we have conveyed our concerns,” he noted.

Since the introduction of GST, the Centre provided compensation to states for only five years, after which that support ended. The CM said Karnataka has seen only 12-13% annual growth in GST revenue, and suggested increasing cess on luxury goods.

“We have asked the Centre to impose cess on items like cigarettes, gutka, luxury cars like Benz, and distribute that revenue to the states,” he said.

The upcoming GST Council meeting is scheduled for September 3 and 4. Siddaramaiah confirmed he will not attend, and that revenue inister Krishna Byre Gowda will represent them state and raise the matter seriously.

Siddaramaiah also addressed criticism from BJP MPs and union ministers, accusing them of failing to speak in Karnataka’s interest. “We’ve lost Rs 11,950 crore in revenue. Have they spoken about that? While they visit Dharmasthala for religious purposes, why are they silent about the injustice to Karnataka?” he asked.

He also confirmed that the Centre has granted approval for the Dasara air show, which will take place on Vijayadashami day.

Giving any case to NIA, CBI, ED and IT is compromising the case without justice with fake narrative and politicizing the entire issue. Courts earlier have rejected these independant agencies reports for lack of evidence and veracity of the contents and upheld SIT investigation report and rendered justice to deserving parties putting BJP in foot in the mouth situation.
