Amroha, Aug 29: In yet another shocking incident of dowry harassment, a 23-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district lost her life after allegedly being forced to consume acid by her in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Gulfiza, who was married to Parvez of Kalakheda village under Didauli police station limits, about a year ago.

According to police sources, the victim’s family alleged that Gulfiza was subjected to constant harassment by her in-laws over demands for Rs 10 lakh in cash and a car. Matters took a horrific turn on August 11, when the accused allegedly forced her to drink acid.

Critically injured, Gulfiza was rushed to hospital where she battled for life for 17 days before succumbing to her injuries on Thursday.

Based on a complaint filed by her father, Furkan, police registered a case against seven persons – Parvez, Asim, Gulista, Monish, Saif, Dr Bhura, and Babbu – under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“Once the post-mortem report is received, provisions related to dowry death will be added and all the accused will be arrested,” said CO City Shakti Singh.

The tragedy has evoked shock and anger, coming close on the heels of another gruesome case in Greater Noida, where a 26-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws at Sirsa village. Police have since arrested four members of her husband’s family, including her father-in-law, brother-in-law, and husband.
