Thane, Aug 28: In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 35-year-old man from Navi Mumbai allegedly set his 32-year-old wife ablaze on suspicion of an extra-marital affair and attempted to stage it as a suicide. However, his cover-up failed after their seven-year-old daughter revealed the truth to police.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 25 at Pagotegaon in Uran. The accused, identified as Rajkumar Ramshiromani Sahu, allegedly tied the hands and legs of his wife, Jagrani Rajkumar Sahu, poured kerosene on her, and set her on fire with a lighter. She was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Initially, the accused claimed that his wife had locked herself inside a room and committed suicide, prompting police to register a case of accidental death. However, discrepancies soon emerged.
“During our probe, the child’s statement proved crucial. She directly told police that her father had set her mother on fire,” said Uran police station senior inspector Hanif Mulani.
CCTV footage further contradicted the husband’s version, showing him leaving the house in the early hours after the crime. Forensic and medical evidence also confirmed foul play.
Based on the findings, Uran police registered a case of murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on August 26 and arrested the accused.
“It is a clear-cut case of murder. We have no doubt that this was a brutal act of domestic violence,” Mulani stated.
Further investigation is underway.
