Fake marriage racket busted in Bihar; 9 arrested including 4 ‘brides’

Patna, Aug 28: Police in Bihar have cracked down on a sophisticated fake marriage racket, arresting nine members including four women who posed as brides to cheat unsuspecting families.

The gang, active in West Champaran district, lured victims into sham marriages and later decamped with valuables, jewellery, and cash. Shockingly, police said the women were already married but integrated themselves into targeted families for brief periods, creating the illusion of genuine matrimonial alliances.

A raid was conducted in the Mainatand area near Bettiah, where four women and five men, including the alleged mastermind Ali Ahmed, were apprehended. Police seized a Bolero vehicle, two motorcycles, and nine mobile phones, which are now being examined for further leads.

“This gang had been operating in Bagaha and Bettiah for quite some time. All were arrested in tip-off raids. Further investigation is likely to reveal more,” said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Prakash Singh.

Victims of the racket reportedly suffered losses running into lakhs of rupees, along with social stigma attached to the fraudulent marriages. Preliminary findings also suggest that the network extended beyond Bihar, with married women specifically recruited to carry out such scams in different states.
