Pune, Aug 25: In a tragic turn of events, a woman who donated part of her liver to save her husband died just days after he passed away following a transplant surgery at a private hospital in Pune. The Maharashtra health department has now issued a notice to Sahyadri Hospital, seeking a detailed report of the procedure.

According to officials, Bapu Komkar and his wife Kamini underwent surgeries on August 15. However, Bapu’s condition deteriorated soon after the transplant, and he died on August 17. Kamini, who had initially shown signs of recovery, developed an infection on August 21 and later succumbed during treatment.

Deputy director of Health Services Dr Nagnath Yempalle said, “We have asked the hospital to submit details of the donor and recipient, their treatment line, and video recordings of the surgery by 10 am on Monday.”

Family members have alleged medical negligence and demanded an inquiry into the double tragedy.

In its statement, the hospital expressed deep condolences and maintained that the surgeries were performed as per standard protocols. It said the patient was a high-risk case and could not be revived despite all efforts, while Kamini later developed septic shock and multi-organ failure. The hospital added it was cooperating fully with the probe.
