Jaishankar defends India’s Russia oil trade, slams western criticism as hypocritical

New Delhi, Aug 23: External affairs minister S Jaishankar issued a firm rebuttal to mounting Western criticism over India’s continued purchase and re-export of Russian crude oil, making it clear that India will not compromise on its strategic autonomy or economic interests. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025 in New Delhi, Jaishankar dismissed pressure from countries such as the U.S., especially former Trump administration officials, who recently raised objections to India’s energy trade with Russia.

“If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don’t buy it. Nobody forces you to buy it,” Jaishankar said bluntly, rejecting what he called “undue pressure and hypocrisy” from nations that themselves continue to do business with Russia.

He questioned the double standards being applied to India, pointing out that China remains the largest buyer of Russian oil, yet faces far less criticism. “We are not the largest buyer. Others are doing it too. So, why us?” he asked, adding that India’s energy procurement is driven by global market dynamics and national necessity.

Taking a swipe at the irony of a “pro-business” American administration criticizing India for doing business, Jaishankar added, “It’s funny to have people who work for a pro-business American administration accusing other people of doing business.”

The minister also reinforced India’s commitment to protecting key domestic interests, including those of its farmers and broader economic sovereignty. “When it comes to the trade, the interests of farmers, when it comes to our strategic autonomy, when it comes to opposition to mediation, this government is very clear,” he stated.

Jaishankar challenged critics to be open with the Indian public about their positions, saying, “Please tell the people of India that you are not prepared to defend the interests of farmers. Please tell the people of India you don’t value strategic autonomy. We do. We will do whatever we have to do to maintain it.”

With his characteristically direct tone, Jaishankar’s message reinforced India’s stance that its foreign and economic policy decisions will be made in Delhi — not dictated by Washington or Brussels.
