Never stop BP medication on your own; risk to brain, heart and kidneys, warns expert

Mumbai, Aug 22: High blood pressure, often termed a “silent killer”, can damage vital organs like the brain, heart and kidneys without showing early symptoms. Experts have now cautioned that one of the biggest mistakes patients make is abruptly stopping or skipping blood pressure medication, assuming they are fine.

On Tuesday, wellness expert Luke Coutinho took to social media to share an important reminder. “Never stop or adjust blood pressure medication on your own,” he warned, stressing that sudden changes can trigger silent spikes in BP, which may prove harmful in the long run.

“Skipping doses may not show immediate effects, but inside the body, damage quietly builds up. It increases risks of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney damage,” he said. Even common signs such as dizziness, fatigue or headaches can sometimes point to fluctuating blood pressure.

Coutinho underlined that any reduction or withdrawal of BP medicines should only be under medical supervision. “If lifestyle improvements like diet and exercise bring results, doctors may taper doses gradually — but only with regular monitoring. Some patients may need medication lifelong, and that is absolutely fine,” he added.

Along with prescribed medicines, the expert highlighted simple but consistent practices to keep BP under control:

• Eating a balanced diet with whole foods

• Staying physically active

• Ensuring adequate sleep

• Managing stress through relaxation, meditation or breathwork
